Report of Mullan Road Tour 2
Sat. - Sun. Sept 16-17, 2000

This tour, led by   and   took the participants from Walla Walla to Spokane on the approximate route of the Mullan Military Road.

Your webmaster did not go, but once again has provided us with excellent pictures and a  report.

"Saturday September 16. Grounds of Ft Walla Walla (USA), waiting for morning tour of L&C sites to return. I joined them at lunch for Mullan Road tour. This marker used to be across from the entrance to the Wash State Pen. but was moved here." (Note: The full text reads: "MULLAN ROAD From Fort Walla to Fort Benton MT. Located by Capt. John Mullan 1858-1862. Erected by the Washington Historical Society 1923". The idea was to provide a land link between the heads of navigation of the Missouri and Columbia Rivers)

At Dry Creek crossing and MMR Campground #1. Don is in road guiding. Left to right are Lethene and Dick Parks, Chuck Fisk, Rich Herman, Judith Bentley, Cheryl Essary, Chuck and Suzanne Hornbuckle.

MMR Campsite #2 was at the Touchet River

After traveling 45 mph on a "Primitive" gravel road, we slowed down to 25 mph on a paved road to look at site of Ft Taylor, confluence of Toucannon (right) and Snake Rivers. Site of Ft Taylor in foreground.

General Jim establishing Fort Tompkins at Lyon's Ferry. Beautiful lawn and sign that says tents allowed on gravel only. End of Saturday trip.

On left is Palouse Falls, with Palouse River right  flowing downstream to meet the Snake.
