Dedication of an Avard
Fairbanks bronze in Boise, ID
April 24, 2002.
11:00 AM
Oregon Trail Reserve Park. 4500 E. Lake Forest Drive.
Take
Hiway 21 exit from I-84 (way to the east side of Boise). Turn left onto
Hiway 21 (Gowen Road) and follow it east to E. Lake Forest Drive. Turn
left (or north) onto E. Lake Forest Drive (this turn is maybe a quarter to
a half mile before you'd arrive at the bridge over the Boise river).
Follow E. Lake Forest Drive northwesterly. There are two parking lots for
the O.T. Reserve, both on the east side of E. Lake Forest Drive, one at
Intercon and on at Orchid Way. The viewpoint is the top of the Kelton
Ramps. Take a few minutes, walk down the trail over the bluff and look at
the rock paintings. We encourage Northwest chapter members to attend.
That is Jeff and David Fairbanks in the photo below, David being the
father. David and his sons did the Pony Express statue in Casper, which is
a duplicate of the statue done by their father that is in SLC. The
marker is the one being dedicated with the plaque missing at the bottom.
The site was developed by Boise Parks... you can see some other
interpretive panels in the background. The father was inspired by
Ezra Meeker to develop the original marker. The other two markers of this
type
are in Baker City and Seaside (of all places!). (Note from Jim Tompkins)
