Fall Gathering In

Saturday, September 28, 12:00 -- 4:30
Borst Park, Centralia WA

Join your fellow members the Fall for a celebration of Centralia, WA. Enjoy some NWOCTA comradeship -- take time to renew old friendships and make new ones. Bring along a friend, or an OCTA member who hasn't been on a chapter activity in a while. Don't forget to bring something for a raffle; it needn't be trail related. Bring your own picnic lunch (this is not a potluck), the chapter will furnish soft drinks and coffee. Some members are planning to bring desserts for 6. If you wish to do this let know with your registration. Please reply by Sept. 18.

We will meet in an enclosed area, complete with fireplace, so cold or damp weather will not be a problem. Chuck Hornbuckle will discuss the Cowlitz Trail that traversed this area. A Centralia based historian will provide local color and a local guide will give tours of the Borst Home, blockhouse and schoolhouse. There is a charge of $2.50 per person for the tour and it is optional.

Directions to Borst Park

Plan to arrive at 12:00 noon or a little after, because the board is having a planning meeting prior to the picnic. From I-5 take Exit 82, turn west. Stay in the left lane of Harrison for0.6 mile and turn left on Johnson Road. Turh left again just beyond Centralia High School. Meet at Borst Kitchen #1 on the left side of the road near the playground.

Historic Borst Home and Army Blockhouse

Built in the early 1860s, this stately white mansion is located on the banks of the Chehalis River near Centralia in Borst Park. Joseph Borst calculated that it was so well built that it would last 80 years. It has already lasted well over a century and is still going strong. The Blockhouse, now moved to the city park to avoid Chehalis River flooding, was constructed by Army volunteers to house supplies for the 1855-56 Indian Wars.
