Colonel Gilliam was a veteran of the Blackhawk war and the Seminole
war. He came to Oregon in 1844, leading
a train of emigrants. When the Cayuse War broke out in 1848, he was made
commander of the forces of the
provisional government, but was killed accidentally early in the
campaign.
The field behind the stone is a cemetery for other
pioneers who were killed in the war. there are no stones and
no indication of where individual graves may be. This site is about 1/4 mile
west of Well Spring. New interpretive
signage was erected here in Oct. 1997, but I have not seen it yet. when I
do I will post it here.
