Certainly the most famous of the emigrant graves on the Barlow Road is the Pioneer Woman's Grave, just off Hwy 35, a little north of Hwy 26. Just a mile down from the summit of Barlow Pass, it is an easy and worthwhile place to visit. If you have a way to shuttle you can hike a mile downhill in some of the most pristine ruts on the trail. The story is that when the highway was built in 1924 the grave was discovered. It was moved outside of the road alignment and a monument placed there.

The large cairn of stones left of the official marker is the purported gravesite. Many visitors add to the pile as the come by. Another interpretive panel tells the whole story of the discovery of the grave and other emigrant references to it.

This is the plaque seen on the stone in the previous picture. As you can see it has been damaged by vandals, with an axe. Once again, I ask: Why? This certainly is one reason for our preservation efforts.
